Midwives offer “a philosophy of care that focuses on the specific needs of women, offers a variety of options, and minimizes unnecessary intervention; and the individuals who hold that title are highly educated professionals who work collaboratively with physicians.”  From http://www.mymidwife.org/index.cfm?id=4

Certified nurse midwives (CNMs) are trained in the disciplines of both midwifery and nursing.  In Vermont, CNMs almost exclusively work in hospitals and clinics.  In most cases, women see more than one CNM within a practice for their pre-natal care and are attended by the CNM that is on-call when they are in labor.  They are an appropriate choice of provider for women who are considered to have a low-risk pregnancy because they generally offer care from a wellness point of view rather than a pathological one.  They also provide well-women gynecological services for women who are not pregnant.  See Questions to Ask Providers for a helpful list of questions in selecting a CNM practice.

For complete CNM listings, check with your insurance plan, Medicaid, or hospitals near you.

Certified midwives (CMs) are educated in the discipline of midwifery and are certified according to the requirements of the American College of Nurse-Midwives. Licensed midwives (LMs) are licensed within the state.  In Vermont, they generally offer homebirth services, including pre-natal and post-partum care. Because they offer care to low-risk women outside of the medical environment, women usually experience fewer medical interventions and a type of care that is tailored to the specific needs and desires of each woman.  In choosing a CM or LM, as with any type of care provider, it is important to know as much about their practice as possible. See Questions to Ask Providers for a comprehensive list of useful questions.
