A doula’s role is to nurture the birthing woman and her partner. She offers guidance, physical and emotional support, and information to help couples make informed choices before, during, and after the birth.  The value of the continuous support of a nurturing and knowledgeable companion during this most sacred time cannot be underestimated. Doulas utilize techniques and comfort measures which ease labor pains and allow the birthing woman to work with her labor in a positive way. Doulas are extremely versed in the terminology surrounding childbirth, as well as common medical interventions, so they can assist their clients in navigating their way through a sometimes confusing and overwhelming system.

Before, after, and during the birth, doulas educate families and help them find the information they need to make confident choices for their family and their birth. Doulas remain with their clients throughout the entire labor, birth, and immediate postpartum time. Perhaps most importantly, doulas are there to provide steadfast, non-judgmental emotional support and reassurance.
